I trust you have all had a wonderful holiday sharing those six special weeks with your children and have been on many wild and wonderful adventures! I would like to be the first to welcome you back to West Chinnock for the autumn term.
As in the summer term we will continue to spelling test on a Wednesday so if all homework books could be returned on Wednesdays then they can be checked, tested and returned to you with new homework and spellings at the end of the day on Thursday. If your child has their homework book from last year please return it to school so we may continue to use it.
We are very lucky this term to have Mrs Hallett running forest school sessions on a Monday afternoon. We have planned for year 1 and Reception to have forest school for the first half of the term and year 2 to do this the second half of the term. This is however subject to change so please ensure that your child has in school a long sleeved top, long trousers, wellington boots and a pair of socks every Monday afternoon.
Our topic this summer term is “Transport”. We are expecting a visit from a fire engine to start our new topic and hope to conclude this topic with a train ride for the class. We will be learning about historical developments in transport and looking at the many different places we could travel to! In Art we will be looking at colour mixing and printing and in DT we will be completing some textiles work to make a Christmas decoration. In ICT we will revisit E-safety and look at the various technology used in different modes of transport. In Science we will be learning about living things and their habitats and the adaptions of plants and animals – this will include looking at how they transport themselves and where they go (including a brief look at migration).
We are very lucky to have Tatty Bumpkin again this term which will be on a Tuesday morning in the village hall. I will also be working with the children on gymnastics in the village hall each Wednesday afternoon. We will also continue to start each morning with a ‘Wake and Shake’ session to get the children focused and ready for the school day. Please would you ensure the children keep their named PE kit in school all week – thank you.
In our daily maths sessions we will review our place value knowledge ready for some number work later in the term. Meanwhile in English we will be working on a variety of non-fiction writing based on our transport topic. In phonics the children will revise their known graphemes as we continue to introduce new ones alongside common exception words to build their reading skill as the term progresses.
Every Tuesday afternoon Mr Mitchell will teach the children music followed by Mr Caswell and Mr Kenward teaching computing. Years 1 and 2 children can also join Mrs Hallett’s choir sessions after school on Mondays.
The reception children will each be given sharing diaries where we will give you a brief update of what we have been doing in school. This is a place for you and your child to detail all the fantastic things you get up to at home to share these ‘Wow’ moments with school and vice versa. These sharing diaries will be sent home every Friday afternoon and we would like you to return them each week for updating.
You will soon be issued with a clubs list detailing the many, varied clubs and which age groups they are open to. Club places are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. We do ask that Reception do not attend clubs as the long school day is often a big enough challenge by itself!
Thank you for your continued help and support; we all look forward to working with you to make this an exciting and enjoyable return to school.
If you have any remaining queries please don’t hesitate to ask one of the Class One staff team.
